NU-CHN-03 – a full-time base annual salary of $95,896 to $109,001 (plus applicable allowances).

Part-time salary and allowances are prorated based on scheduled hours and work location.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to create an inventory of nurses who may be considered for current and future positions at Indigenous Services Canada across various locations, with different tenures and language requirements.

 

Duties
Community Health Nurses deliver comprehensive community health services to remote and/or isolated First Nations communities in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. They apply in-depth nursing knowledge, advanced clinical judgment, and strong clinical assessment skills to provide safe, effective care across the lifespan. Community Health Nurses conduct detailed health assessments, identify early signs of deterioration, and make timely, evidence-informed decisions in environments with limited on-site resources. They provide consultation, direct clinical practice, leadership, and support knowledge transfer through health promotion and disease prevention activities.


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Required for the Job)

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following: 

Occupational Certification

  • Eligibility* for registration as a Registered Nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

*Eligibility is defined as a candidate having met all academic and occupational requirements, including those with respect to degrees, examinations, and experience, without having to have obtained or maintained actual registration, certification or membership in a professional association.

Essential Experience

  • Recent* and Significant** experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) in one or more of the following areas***:
    • Acute Care
    • Urgent Care
    • Emergency Care
    • Intensive Care

Recent* is defined as within the last five (5) years.

Significant** is defined as at least two (2) years of combined full-time equivalent experience with the candidate performing complex activities related to this task

Official Language Proficiency

Conditions of Employment

  • Reliability Status Security Clearance.
  • Valid driver's license or personal mobility to a degree normally associated with the possession of a driver's license.
  • Medical Clearance Requirement: Nurses working in remote and isolated First Nations communities must meet specific medical requirements to ensure they can safely perform the physical and psychological demands of the role. A medical clearance confirms they are fit to work in environments with limited resources, high acuity situations, and frequent emergency response. This assessment helps protect both the nurse and the community by ensuring they can safely carry out all required duties.

Due to the urgent need to staff nursing stations, new employees may begin work with a Category 1 Personal Health Declaration. However, all employees will be required to complete a full Category 3 Health Evaluation within their first 12 months of employment to meet the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard for Health Care Providers working in remote and isolated communities.

  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently in small aircraft, off-road vehicles, and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas.
  • Willingness and ability to be temporarily reassigned to other communities as operationally required.
  • Willingness and ability to perform on-call duties, work after hours, and on weekends as required.
  • Willingness and ability to complete mandatory education/training relevant to the position, including cultural learning and nursing in-services required for this role.
    • Ontario and Manitoba Regions require all candidates to have valid Heart and Stroke Basic Life Support certificate prior to appointment.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive orientation program including the effective demonstration of the nursing competencies required for working autonomously in a remote and isolated post, during the probation period or other duration determined by the region.
  • Current valid registration as a Registered Nurse and a member in good standing in the province where the position is located. No history of license suspensions or restrictions with any professional regulatory organizations and no current or outstanding remedial action/strategy required by any regulatory body.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Education – Asset

Proof of Education is not a requirement for appointment to the position, however it is required for the allocation of the education allowance.

Candidates with foreign credentials will need to provide proof of Canadian equivalency in order to qualify for the education allowance. 

Experience – Asset 1

  • At least 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) providing direct patient care in a Canadian clinical setting.

 Experience – Asset 2

  • Recent* and significant** experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) in one or more of the following areas:
    • Primary Care Clinic***
    • Chronic Disease Management (including Mental Health or Addictions) 
    • Pediatrics
    • Obstetrics
    • Immunization
    • Public Health Nursing

Recent* is defined as within the last three years.

Significant** is defined as at least one year of full-time equivalent experience with the candidate performing complex activities related to this task in a wide variety of situations.

Primary Care Clinic*** is defined as a clinic setting where a variety of professionals are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs.
